A little update - dad has just finished 4 weeks of radiotherapy. He is weak and wobbly - speech is bad, balance is bad and strength is bad, but somehow we were expecting worse. He's glad it's over and he still has all his hair! We won't know for a few weeks if it's actually made any difference, but at least round one is done.
This blog is made up of transcripts of Harry Lamin's letters from the first World War. The letters will be posted exactly 90 years after they were written. To find out Harry's fate, follow the blog!

- Pte Harry Lamin
- Born in August 1887 in Awsworth Notts, to Henry and Sarah Lamin. Elder Sisters Catherine (Kate), Mary Esther and Sarah Anne(Annie) and Elder brother John (Jack). Educated at Awsworth Board School, just outside Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England. I served with honour in the 9th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment seeing front line action in Flanders and Northern Italy from the end of 1916 to January 1920.

From 1st March 1918 the leap year in 2008 takes the synchronicity of the days and dates away. Decision: I will publish letters a day in advance so that the days of the week coincide, rather than the date.

I spent a few days with Bill in 2008 in the Ypres area where Harry served (my Granddad had been futher down the line). Having always wanted to visit the trenches, I could not have wished for a better way. Strangely, in an emotional few days, the most moving thing for me was the perception of Bill's schoolkids of Harry's situation, in some of the notes he brought over. Wishing you well mate, and pride in having brought an ordinary guy's story to light.

Second, he may have heard this sad news but his long-time friend, King George Tupou V, died 18 March at a hospital in Hong Kong. Continue to hope all is going well. Shared story of this blog with a docent at the Seattle Museum of Flight last weekend -- he was so excited as they have several preserved aircraft from the war and a number of relevant exhibits.
